A turf area for dogs only works if urine drains through it, odor has somewhere to go, and paws aren't cooking on it in July. Those three things are decided by the base, the infill and the location, more than by the turf brand. We pass pet-area requests to a turf installer who can help, so the plan fits your dog and your yard.

Drainage comes first

Urine needs to pass through the turf backing and the base quickly. That means turf with a backing designed to drain, a crushed rock base compacted with a slight fall, and a plan for where the water goes after that. A low corner where water sits will smell first.

If the area is next to a wall, ask how the installer will keep runoff from pooling against it. The drainage and base guide explains the layers and why depth matters.

Odor control

Infill is the granular layer brushed in between the fibers. For pet areas, installers often suggest infills made to trap or reduce ammonia smell, such as zeolite products. Official sources urge caution about infill materials where pets play, so ask for the product information on any infill you're quoted; our infill guide sums up what they say and compares the options.

No infill replaces rinsing, so plan for a hose bib within reach of the area before the turf goes down.

Heat and paws

Paws are closer to the surface than your feet are. Put the pet area where the house or a shade sail covers it in the afternoon, and leave the dog a shaded spot to lie down off the turf; our guide to how hot turf gets in summer has the measured temperatures.

Planning the layout

Dogs tend to wear a path along fences and gates, so ask about heavier turf or a gravel strip there. Keep the area small enough to rinse easily, and make sure the gate or door to it stays clear of the edge seam.

If you'd also like a putting green or a play lawn, keep them separate from the dog area. Different uses need different turf, and our main installation page covers the lawn side.

Keeping it clean

AMWUA, the association of Phoenix-area municipal water providers, notes that turf has to be rinsed off with water, sometimes with soap, and that pet waste must be removed. For a dog area that means picking up solid waste daily and rinsing the used spots at least weekly, more often in summer when a big dog uses the run.

The rest of the care is the same as for any turf, and the turf maintenance guide sets it out season by season.

Questions to ask for a dog area

A pet area is quoted on details a lawn quote can skip. Ask these, and get the answers in the written estimate.

  • Which way will the area drain, and where does rinse water end up?
  • Is the backing on the quoted turf made to drain quickly?
  • Which infill do you suggest for odor, and can I see its product information?
  • Where is the nearest hose bib, and can the whole area be rinsed from it?
  • How deep will the base be under the dog area, compared with the rest of the yard?

Pet turf questions

Is pet turf different from regular turf?

Usually in the backing and the setup more than the look. Pet areas need a backing that drains quickly, a medium pile that's easy to clean, and an infill made for odor control.

How much does it cost to install pet friendly artificial turf?

Pet areas are priced like other turf jobs, by square foot, with extra for drainage work and odor-control infill. HomeGuide lists $10 to $25 per square foot installed, and the cost estimator on our turf cost page works through your yard size.

Does pet turf smell in the summer?

It can if urine sits in the base or the used spots go unrinsed. Summer is when a dog run needs rinsing most often, which is why the hose bib belongs in the plan from the start.
