Turf needs less work than grass, but it isn't maintenance-free. AMWUA notes it has to be brushed and rinsed, sometimes with soap, and pet waste removed. In a Peoria yard, add dust, desert debris and monsoon storms to that list.
Weekly
Clear leaves and debris with a leaf blower or a stiff plastic rake. A quick rinse also settles dust after windy days.
Monthly
Brush the fibers against the grain with a stiff broom to keep them upright, especially in walking paths. Check seams and edges for lifting.
After monsoon storms
Summer storms leave grit, leaves and sometimes small branches. Clear them soon after, since debris that sits can block drainage through the backing. If water pooled anywhere during the storm, note the spot and mention it to the installer. The drainage guide explains what causes pooling.
Yearly
Top up infill in thin spots, especially where water flows across the turf. Give the whole area a deeper rinse. Some homeowners hire a turf cleaning service once a year, particularly for pet areas.
Pet areas
Dog areas need more frequent rinsing in summer and an odor-control infill. Our pet turf page covers the setup, and the infill guide compares options.
What wears turf out
Sun exposure, heavy traffic in one path, and things like grills, fire pits and furniture with sharp feet all shorten turf life. Keep heat sources off it entirely, since melted fibers can't be repaired. If you're replacing worn turf, our installation page explains how we set up estimates.
